The Winter months are almost upon us and as the cooler, drier weather sets in it can wreak havoc with our hair, leading to dry, dull and stressed out strands. Here are some keys tips and tricks to keep your hair and scalp feeling fresh and healthy this Winter.
1. Protect your hair from the elements
Hats are a go-to accessory for keeping warm in the winter and for disguising our not so great hair days, but there are some things to keep in mind.
Repeated friction caused by regular hat wearing can lead to hair breakage. Additionally, hats can sometimes flatten the hair and give it a dull, oilier appearance as they don’t always offer sufficient ventilation let the scalp breathe, which can then also lead to a build-up of sweat that could irritate the scalp. Try mitigating this by using an anti-dandruff shampoo to stop dandruff in its tracks before flakes start to appear.
Whenever possible, opt for hats that are lined with silk or satin so your hair can glide about freely and retain its natural moisture, and avoid hats made of wool, cotton and similar fabrics which can snag hair and zap its moisture.

2. Keep hydrated, inside and out
If you are dehydrated on the inside, it will show on the outside too so make sure you drink plenty of water to help keep your hair and skin hydrated.
Using a moisture rich shampoo, conditioner and treatment regularly will also help to maintain moisture levels and avoid a dry scalp caused by winter weather and temperature fluctuations between indoors and outdoors.
Leave in moisturising products can also help to nourish, hydrate and replenish hair and act as a barrier to protect it from further damage from the dry air and winter fabrics.
3. Avoid over-styling
Limiting the use of heated styling tools like hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons during the Winter months can help to keep your hair’s moisture levels up, as heat styling can dry out the hair and scalp leaving is more susceptible to damage and breakage.
If you simply cannot step away from your trusty straightener or dryer, make sure your hair is protected with a high quality heat protector before using heated styling tools and treat weakened hair regularly with a reconstructing shampoo and treatment containing protein.

4. Get regular trims
Whether you have long or short hair, winter weather can make the ends of your hair dry and brittle. Visiting your salon for regular trims will keep your hair in good condition and reduce the chance of split ends.

5. Wash hair in warm or cool water
It might be tempting in the colder months to turn the water temperature up, but try to avoid washing your hair in very hot water, and use warm or cool water instead to avoid damage.
Hot water can dry out your hair and damage the delicate skin on your scalp, which may be extra sensitive during the winter.
Extreme temperatures, both cold and hot, can strip the moisture from your strands, causing them to become dehydrated, which can then lead to frizz, dullness and damage.
6. Don’t leave home with wet hair
Take the time to dry your hair or let it dry naturally before going outside. When the hair is left wet and exposed to cold temperatures, the water within the hair shaft can crystallize and expand, causing the hair strand to break.
