Starting your low-tox journey is an exciting and empowering time, although sometimes there can be roadblocks that leave us disheartened. We often find that our community is loving our natural and organic formulations and the results, but they could be sensitive to fragrances, or their skin can be irritated by fragrances. With the recent re-introduction of our Fragrance Free Range in 1 Litre bottles, we wanted to take this opportunity to discuss the introduction into low-tox living, and what you can do if you notice fragrance irritations.
We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to chat with one of our long-standing stockists, Kalli Fardoulis. With over two decades of experience in the hairdressing industry, Holistic Health Coach and founder and owner of Blown Away Hair Spa for over 18 years, Kalli offers a wealth of knowledge on low-tox living and the hair industry.
“Living a low-tox life has not only guided me towards pursuing more fulfilling work but also blessed me with the opportunity to welcome a beautiful baby boy into my life.”
Kalli describes her passion for hairstyling began before she was walking, recognising early on the power of a hairstyle to enhance someone’s confidence. Reflecting on her transition to a low-tox lifestyle, she recalls… “Initially, holistic living was not my focus, but after experiencing fertility challenges a decade into my business, I embraced holistic health and reignited my passion for my craft…For me, living a low tox life goes beyond eliminating toxins; it’s about breaking free from limitations that hold us back.
Kalli found those with sensitivities or those prone to allergies were seeking low-tox alternatives which many of us can relate to. Without having guidance from someone like Kalli, it can be hard to understand what is actually organic and natural. On the other hand, you may be using the right products, but your hair and scalp still aren’t happy.
You might not realise it, but fragrance sensitivities are surprisingly common ad could be affecting you. Fragrance sensitivities don’t always manifest in the most obvious ways, but Kalli observed: “The most frequent signs I’ve personally observed, as well as others, associated with fragrances, include symptoms resembling asthma and skin rashes.” Other symptoms can include headaches, burning skin and nausea.
Of course, ‘Parfum’ and synthetic fragrance made up of many unidentified ingredients can cause symptoms like mentioned above, but it’s extra disheartening when you still have these reactions to natural fragrance i.e. essential oils. Kalli explains this further:
“Individuals can have allergies to natural ingredients such as plant extracts, not just synthetic compounds. Essential oils in particular work so well because they are so potent, in products like shampoo or conditioner they are highly diluted however natural they should still be used with caution and some direction. This reason it’s important to communicate any concerns with a stylist who is knowledgeable on this topic…”
Does this mean that essential oils and extracts are bad? Of course not! But everyone can react differently even with the most natural or organic ingredients. Here at EverEscents, we understand this and wanted to formulate a range that will be safe for even the most sensitive skin, those with irritations to fragrance or fragrance allergies.
Our EverEscents Fragrance Free Range contains the same incredible botanicals, extracts and certified organic ingredients you see in our other ranges, just without the fragrance! This is a low allergen formula that has been allergy certified by Safe Cosmetics Australia.
For Kalli’s best advice for those with fragrance skin irritations:
“If you have sensitivities or have experienced reactions to fragrances before, I recommend seeking advice from a naturopath or Integrative Doctor to determine any potential underlying causes and receive professional guidance. Consider using fragrance-free products such as the EverEscents fragrant-free range. Inform your stylist about your sensitivities so they can make better choices during your hair appointment.”
Before we wrapped up this incredibly insightful chat we had to ask Kalli the reason she chose EverEscents as a long time stockist; “To be honest, Luke visited my salon during our early switch to low-tox products, introduced himself, and left me a small sachet of the Deep Treatment. Typically, I give away such samples, as I am confident in my products. However, this time, I felt compelled to try it at home. I was impressed by how it made my hair look and feel, and even my friends noticed its shine, mistaking it for a new hair colour. Fast forward almost a decade, I now rent a chair in Cronulla and continue to recommend this product to all my clients. Personally, I wouldn’t switch to any other brand. The EverEscents range has been the first line in my business that I genuinely love and stock completely.”
